The Out-of-Door Academy: eBanyan

January 2011

Happy New Year and welcome back to campus. We hope you had a restful and joyous holiday break. The new year affords us time to reflect back on the previous year and prepare for the year ahead. The Out-of-Door administration, faculty and staff would like to share with you some highlights from 2010. We welcome you to send us your own "Best of 2010" list and we are looking forward to a productive and successful 2011.

The first semester in the Arts wrapped up with beautiful Winter concerts on both campuses. The Lower School celebrated grandparents and grandfriends at the annual Grandfriends' Day. Grandfriends enjoyed performances from the students, one on one activities with their grandchildren and a sense of community and family to bring in the holiday season. Look for video from the concerts and Grandfriends Day on YouTube later this month. You can friend us on Facebook (Oda Thunder) to see up to date videos from YouTube and news from the school. We will also post it on the school's website.

College Counseling

Congratulations to seniors, Rachel Cannon, Kevin Ramsay, Spencer Feder, and Caitlin Adamson who all scored a perfect 800 on a section of the SAT. Also, congratulations to the entire Class of 2011 for scoring an average of over 1200 on the combined mathematics and verbal sections of the SAT. This makes them the sixth consecutive class at the Out-of-Door Academy to surpass this benchmark, exceeding state and national SAT averages by over 200 points!

Drama Department Update

After three years of dedicated service to The Out-of-Door Academy, Mark Lubas resigned his position at the end of December to pursue new opportunities including a return to professional opera. Under his leadership, the theater arts program at Out-of-Door has grown dramatically. Student participation in drama is at an all-time high and the program now features many new elements such as student directed productions, acting classes, technical theater classes, independent studies and a partnership with the Asolo Theater. We appreciate all that Mark has done for the program and wish him well as he pursues his musical career.

We are pleased to welcome Katie Dobosz, Out-of-Door Academy Class of 2006 and a recent graduate of the University of Central Florida back to ODA. Katie will teach the middle school drama classes and will assist with all of the productions scheduled for the spring term. L'Tanya Evans will direct the spring musical, "Guys & Dolls" which features a cast of 60 and promises to be a show to remember in the Black Box Theater March 24-26.

Thank you to all of the families who have joined the Family of Funds already this year. Annual Fund gifts go directly to the programming at Out-of-Door. Join them today and make your pledge online.
