About The Out-of-Door Academy
Founded in 1924, The Out-of-Door Academy is a coeducational, college preparatory, independent day school serving 600 students from pre-kindergarten to grade twelve in Sarasota, Florida. The school’s mission is to provide an environment in which students strive to achieve high academic goals and to build character through a balanced program of academics, athletics and the arts. In 2005, The Out-of-Door Academy earned membership in the prestigious Cum Laude Society. Just 14 secondary schools in Florida (of 735) and only 342 secondary schools in the United States (of 24,000) have earned this distinction since 1904. Since the founding of the Upper School, 100% of the school’s graduates have been accepted and matriculated to four-year colleges and universities, and 70% of each year’s senior class matriculates out of state.
The Out-of-Door Academy Lower School (PreK-6) is situated on a five-acre site on Siesta Key, a barrier island off the west coast of Sarasota. The Upper School, which was founded in 1996, resides on 85 acres in suburban Sarasota, approximately ten miles east of the Lower School. The implementation of the school’s campus master plan is nearing completion with the successful renovation of the historic Siesta Key Campus and the addition of a 25,000 square foot visual/performing arts center at the Uihlein Campus. The recently expanded athletic facilities are excellent, including a new tennis center, baseball and softball fields, and a track and field with stadium seating. A fitness center and weight training facility will be completed in the summer of 2010.
Sarasota is a wonderful, family-oriented community with one of the fastest growing under-40 populations in Florida. The beaches of Sarasota have been ranked as some of the world’s ten best on several occasions. Most home communities in Sarasota are only 10 minutes from the beach. Sarasota is conveniently located 50 miles south of Tampa and 90 miles north of Naples. Orlando and Miami are two hours and four hours by car, respectively.
