This course examines how photography has transitioned from a print-based medium to a digital platform. We will investigate how photography has become a tool of communication and visual art form. Understanding how digital imagery impacts contemporary social norms and visual storytelling will allow a deeper understanding of the art of photography. The availability of smartphones with high capacity cameras allows everyone everywhere to capture images. This constant flow of readily available imagery and information will be studied and discussed. Students will rely solely on their smartphones and DSLR cameras, and learn creative editing through Photoshop to manipulate and understand the image-making process. This virtual class will have a blend of on- and off-screen work, large group instruction, small group, and individual project critiques. Required equipment and supplies: Device capable of taking photographs: phone, tablet or equivalent, and access to a DSLR camera Nikon D3200 or equivalent. Mandatory attendance is required for all classes to receive credit for the course.
