Art Under the Banyan Showcases Creativity & Artistic Talent(s)

First and second grade presented impressive artwork in the Kozel Amphitheater this morning during their Art Under the Banyan exhibition. Student artwork covered a wide variety of styles, artists, and materials. Dr. Vasilaki and her students played lovely music on their string instruments while parents admired their students’ masterpieces.
First graders studied African art and created yarn weavings on hand-built looms and made mixed-media lion portraits painted in blended, warm tones. During their unit on architecture, students learned to look for geometric shapes in buildings and then designed their own cut-paper cityscape collages. While working with clay, classes made colorful pinch-pot bird baths decorated with carvings, textured stamps, and glass marbles.

In second grade, students were introduced to Central American art, studying the traditional colorful patterns, whimsical designs, and natural materials. They created Molas—layered animal designs filled with brightly colored patterns and tin suns embossed into metal with mosaic backgrounds. After studying American artist Georgia O’Keefe, students explored the gardens on campus and used their iPads to take close-up photographs of nature. They then used these photos to create abstract paintings in the style of the iconic artist. The second graders also displayed their clay coil pots embellished with their own creative touches.
