Kindergarten Students Go Behind-the-Scenes at SNN

As part of the kindergarten unit on weather and meteorology, students visited the SNN studio in Sarasota this week to see the systems used for weather tracking and learn about the broadcast process.
SNN Meteorologist Mr. Marco La Manno was engaging and entertaining as he took the inquisitive kindergarteners on a tour. He showed the students the control room, explaining all about the equipment and the different technology used to set up the weather videos, transitions, and music for all of the weather and news segments. “I learned how to use the controls in the control room. There were a lot of buttons!” Hudson Turek ‘31 remarked.

Mr. La Manno then spoke with the group about the science behind weather forecasting. He explained the different weather patterns associated with dry air and moisture, and talked about the approaching cold front and how drier air (usually) means no rain. Mr. La Manno also showed the students the weather camera mounted on the roof of the building, and played live video to show all of the fog currently in the region.

The students then watched a live broadcast of the news which included the weather segment they had just learned about. At the conclusion of the broadcast, the students were brought on camera for a cute introduction. Watch the clip below.
