Middle School Thespians Shine in “The Jungle Book KIDS”

Tigers, bears, and monkeys have filled the Black Box Theater for this week’s Middle School production of “The Jungle Book KIDS.” The ensemble cast showcases a range of characters as they lead us through the familiar story of a young boy raised by wild animals.
The ODA version adds a modern twist as the story begins in a present-day classroom, but maintains the crux of the original story. The truncated presentation fully represents the lessons learned as the characters sing and dance their way through the jungle on a journey to deliver Mowgli to the “man village.” The audience on opening night enjoyed watching the young talent own the various roles as they learned what friendship is all about.

Guest Director Amy Landis brought her expertise to bear in guiding our young student-actors during her week-long visit. Students practiced voice and speech control, learned the importance of working together in an ensemble, and gained valuable tips on how to embody a character. Ms. Landis is a professional actor, teaching artist, and professor of theater arts from Pittsburgh, PA.

Special thanks are in order for two seniors who devoted valuable time to helping these young actors. Mary Fulton ‘19 has been involved in ODA’s theater program since sixth grade, lending a hand in each Middle School production throughout her high school years. Her guidance and support as stage manager for “The Jungle Book Kids” was invaluable. Clayton Watson ‘19 has worked on stage and behind the scenes since eighth grade at ODA. His expertise working with sound and light has enhanced the Middle School productions during his time and this final show was no exception. Congratulations to the cast and crew!
