ODA Student-Artists Rock Hard to 90s Hits

The sound of wailing guitars and rhythmic percussion combined with harmonized vocals, strings, and horns filled the vast space at Woodland Community Church at last week’s 90s Rock Concert. Click here to view photos from the concert and view a video of the performance here.
Students donned concert T-shirts from the era to complete the theme at this upbeat and impressive event that appealed to music lovers from all genres. The church provided Upper School students (as well as a few Middle School standouts) an incredible experience to perform on a professional stage where their talents were appropriately showcased. The orchestral section included melodic versions of alternative/rock songs, with shining vocals on pieces by Guns ‘N Roses and Nirvana. Jazz Ensemble brought a unique, classical feel to the hard rock anthem “Enter Sandman” by Metallica and “All Star” by Smash Mouth. Chorus Ensemble shared several renditions of 90s hits from Alanis Morisette to Red Hot Chili Peppers with various members taking center stage to share truly impressive lead vocals. In addition, the group sang an impressive a capella R&B medley blending their voices with impressive harmonic poise.

The Rock Band-backed many star vocals in performances fit for a live concert audience - these students could take this show on the road! “Creep” by Radiohead, “Black” by Pearl Jam, “Zombie” by the Cranberries, and “Just a Girl” by No Doubt are quintessential 90s hits performed by young talents who nailed their arrangements. In between each song, a piano medley was introduced as part of a “Name that Tune” trivia contest. The finale of the concert was “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” by Nirvana, featuring striking vocals and ODA cheerleaders to emulate the classic video.

The performance raised close to $900 for Manatee BUDS through admission donations and the sale of ODA student artwork. Special thanks to Woodland Community Church for allowing us to use their amazing facility and overseeing the lighting and sound to fully support our amazing student-artists.
