Pre-K Students Share Multicultural Experiences

The Class of 2035's heritage was celebrated with a multifaceted unit that included geography, language, culture, and music. Click here to view video from the event.
Students in Pre-K represent many international countries, and throughout the year Mrs. Robins, Mr. Babich, Ms. Shaw, and Ms. Linse have embraced each family’s culture and traditions through music, dance, food, geography lessons, custom dress, and literature.

Each morning when students arrive, they welcome each other with a greeting native to their country of heritage. Students talked about their favorite family traditions, sharing fascinating details, and giving a wonderful insight into their celebrations.

"We love learning the many languages our children speak...we can now greet a friend in 12 different languages," said Mrs. Robins. "Our parents have graciously come to our classrooms to share their family traditions and international heritages. Using Google Earth, we have viewed satellite imagery of the many countries our classmates have lived in and enjoyed photographs from recent family holidays abroad. We all learn so much through these authentic experiences."

In preparation for the Pre-K Multicultural Assembly, Dr. Linda Vasilaki taught the students the lyrics to “We Are The World,” along with the American Sign Language signs to the song. The children began the assembly with a parade, proudly bearing their countries' flags before they sang with heart and compassion for their audience, many of whom were visibly moved by their sincerity.

"The assembly was a wonderful opportunity to connect with others," said Mrs. Robins. "Embracing diversity is where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated."
