Siesta Key Book Swap Promotes Importance of Reading

This week our Lower Schoolers arrived at the Siesta Key Campus carrying a special bag. Each bag contained books they had either outgrown or had read so many times they knew them by heart and were ready to share them with someone else. These books were perfect candidates for donation to the Lower School Book Swap, a program that gives used books renewed impact for our students and children less fortunate.
Students exchanged each book for a ticket and proceeded to their classrooms where they began to talk about their books to their classmates, sharing how much they had loved reading them and how they should consider them for their swaps. Some encouraged their friends to read their favorites and others suggested titles for younger siblings. The common denominator in these discussions that teachers noted was hearing students talk about the enjoyment of reading for pleasure.

At the end of the week, classes visited the “book store” our talented parent volunteers created in the Glendy Huene Library. Students shopped the store, carefully perusing the enormous selection of books that covered a wide variety of subjects and genres, swapping their tickets for “new” books when they found titles that interested them.

Mrs. Glynis Miller visited classrooms and explained to the students that they also had the opportunity to “donate” a book by putting one (or more) of their tickets into a donation box. “These donations, along with all of the books remaining at the conclusion of the swap will be delivered to a non-profit organization in need,” said Mrs. Miller. “In past years we have donated books to the Visible Men Academy and Mothers Helping Mothers; this year the book swap donations will be delivered to the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee, an organization that Mrs. Daniele Daddario has built a relationship with. After counting the books, we are pleased to be able to donate more than 350 titles to the Guadalupe Center."
