Set in Santa Rosa, California in 1986, the week of the Miss California Young American Miss Pageant, SMILE is the story of Brenda Freelander who was third runner-up in the National Young American Miss Pageant 18 years ago. She is a study in surface perfection and just-below-the-surface neurosis, Brenda is an ex-Prom queen who lost a contest once and will never stopped trying to make up for it. Never a hair out of place, never a public loss of poise, she aspires to the flawless immaculate looks and demeanor of Madison Avenue mannequins and certain television newswomen. Although she can not quite do it yet, she'll get it right if it kills hers. The music is by Marvin Hamlisch (A Chorusline) fame and the Book and Lyrics by Howard Ashman (Little Shop of Horrors and Disney’s The Little Mermaid). The show opens on Wednesday, March 29 and runs Thursday, March 30 both nights at 7PM. Saturday, April 1 and Sunday April 2 at 2PM. The play has some mature themes and is recommended for grades 8 and up. Plan to join us for trip to the Reagan-era 80s.Admission is $5 and free for ODA students, faculty and staff.
