Out-of-Door is an independent day school in Sarasota, Florida educating students in Pre-K through 12th grade.

Brief History

  • Founded by Fanneal Harrison and Catherine Gavin on Siesta Key in 1924
  • Expanded to Lakewood Ranch in 1996
  • Since the inaugural graduating class in 1999, 100% of graduates accepted to a 4-year college/university
  • Voted Division 1A "Best overall Athletic Program" in 2002 by the Florida High School Athletic Coaches Association (FHSACA)
  • Appointed David Mahler Head of School in 2004
  • Inducted into the Cum Laude Society in 2005

    • Encompasses recently renovated classroom buildings, art studios, music rooms, technology labs, science labs, an outdoor amphitheater, outdoor and covered play areas, and state-of-the-art age appropriate playground equipment
  • An 85-acre campus in Sarasota, Florida in the Lakewood Ranch area for grades 6-12 (Middle School and Upper School)
    • Encompasses a brand new STEM and Student Center, classroom buildings, art studios, a 590-seat Black Box Theater, athletic facilities, including 10 tennis courts

College Counseling

A natural consequence of a quality secondary education is college admission. Out-of-Door’s College Counseling program is designed to ensure successful transition from the secondary school experience to a variety of post-secondary options. Out-of-Door students have a variety of options, including Ivy League universities, highly selective liberal arts colleges, and universities around the country and the world. Recent college acceptances include schools such as American University, Barnard College, Boston College, Bucknell University, Carnegie Mellon University, Colgate University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Duke University, Florida State University, University of Florida, George Washington University, Georgetown University, Lafayette College, McGill University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Miami, New York University, University of Notre Dame, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, Tulane University, University of Virginia, Washington University in St. Louis, Wellesley College, Wesleyan University, College of William and Mary, and Yale University, among others.
