How to Apply: Admissions Process

The admissions team at The Out-of-Door Academy seeks students with curiosity, passion, integrity, and a commitment to academic, athletic, artistic, and personal growth.

Admission decisions are determined by your application, recommendations, grades, interviews, and test scores. We admit students who can succeed academically and who will contribute to our independent school community.

Important Admissions Timeline

To facilitate the admissions process, we recommend that you follow the guidelines listed below. These steps are important and necessary in expediting the admission decision.

Submit an Inquiry / Tour the Campus

Prospective students and families are invited to visit and experience the Out-of-Door campuses and see the students, faculty, and curriculum in action.  Tours are scheduled during the week.  Please call the Admissions Office at 941-554-3400 to schedule a personal tour or fill out our Tour the Campus/Request More Information form.

Complete & Return the Application & Application Fee

Complete and return the Application for Admission, and the appropriate questionnaires, along with a recent photograph and the $100 application fee.  

Applications must be completed by March 1, 2017 in order for an applicant’s file to be considered for the March 13, 2017 notification date.

Applications completed after the deadlines will be handled on a rolling admissions basis, pending space availability.

In order to evaluate your child’s application to The Out-of-Door Academy, we must have transcripts and recommendation forms from his/her present school. Please complete and submit the Parent Authorization for Release of Student Records form along with the grade appropriate teacher recommendation form(s) to your child’s current school. These forms should be completed in early January and mailed directly to The Out-of-Door Academy Admissions Office by the applicant's current school.

Applicants for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten: Individual and Group Assessments

The Admissions Office will contact all Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten applicants to schedule the Individual and Group Assessments.  

Because admission to The Out-of-Door Academy’s Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs is based primarily on  individual developmental readiness, the School recommends applicants for Pre-Kindergarten turn four (4) and  applicants for Kindergarten turn five (5) by September 1 of their entry year.

Applicants for Grades 1-5: Testing, Classroom Visitation.

After submitting the completed application materials, please call to schedule your child’s testing and classroom visitation date.

Applicants for Grades 6-12: SSAT Testing and Classroom Visitation.

After submitting the completed application materials, please call to schedule a school visit .

Register to take the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) online at www.ssat.org. (Important: Indicate "The Out-of-Door Academy" as a score recipient to ensure that the score reports are received in a timely manner.) Click here to download the SSAT Registration Instructions. SSAT registration materials are also available from the Admissions Office.  If the applicant has recently taken the ISEE, SAT, or PSAT, these test results may be considered in place of the SSAT scores.

The SSAT will be offered at Out-of-Door on:

October 15, 2016; November 12, 2016; December 10, 2016; January 7, 2017; February 11, 2017; March 4, 2017; April 22, 2017; and June 10, 2017.

Decision Process

All completed applications (all required steps satisfied) are reviewed by the admissions committee to determine whether the student and the School are an appropriate match. It is the responsibility of the applicant's parent(s)/guardian(s) to ensure that all materials have been received by The Out-of-Door Academy.

Acceptance and Enrollment

Application files are reviewed by the admissions committee once they have been completed. Upon acceptance, students will be sent an acceptance packet and an enrollment agreement. The enrollment agreement and a deposit of $1,000 ($100 for financial assistance applicants) are required to reserve your child's space at The Out-of-Door Academy.  This deposit will be applied toward tuition.

October 15, 2016; November 12, 2016; December 10, 2016;  January 7, 2017; February 11, 2017; March 4, 2017 – Required SSAT dates for students who would like to be considered for the March 13, 2017, notification date.
