USF Professor Teaches Students about Refugee Crisis

Upper School students learned about refugee families from a special guest speaker last week. Dr. Jody McBrien spoke with the students in assembly about overcoming stereotypes of refugee children.
She gave statistics on the global refugee crisis and discussed Florida’s role in resettlement. Dr. McBrien is a professor at USF whose service and research focuses on children affected by war, whether they are resettled refugee students and their families, or children and families who have returned to their home communities following war. She visited several classes to offer insight on what it’s like to be displaced from your home as a refugee and how stereotypes further complicate the situation. Students were empathetic to the cause and wanted to learn more about how to help.
