Second Grade Visits Manatee County Landfill

Students learn about the science involved behind the landfill process as part of their cross curricular study focused on sustainability and their community.
Second graders visited the Manatee County Landfill as part of their cross curricular study focusing on sustainability and their community. The group was amazed with what they saw and learned about the amount of science involved behind the landfill process. They heard about water and gas pollution, discovered how our yard waste is used as mulch and compacting dirt, and were shocked to hear that a lot of packaging waste from companies is sent to the landfill instead of recycling. After the trip, the group stopped at a local park to reflect on their experience. Students were impressed with how well the county recycles and reuses as much of the waste as possible and how well the county takes care of the property.
