ODA Students Raise Impressive Total for Relay for Life

Four ambitious upperclassmen planned the 2018 Upper School Relay for Life at the Uihlein Campus on April 14, and raised an impressive amount of money for the American Cancer Society. Juniors Mutaz Faqqouseh, John Floersheimer, Kat Gaukhman, and Andrea Schiro planned the entire fundraising event, including games, a food truck, live music, and more. Director of Facilities Mr. Dan Dennehy was instrumental in the event’s success, offering logistical and setup help.

While the relay was underway, activities like limbo, musical chairs, and carnival-style games created by each team provided entertainment for attendees. Survivor Mrs. Shelley Stone spoke about her battle with cancer and shared the impact that research funded by events like Relay for Life has had on her life. Everyone in attendance joined her for an inspiring survivor lap to honor all those who continue to fight the disease. Other themed laps included a dancing lap, leapfrog lap, and conga line lap. As the evening progressed, glowing luminaria bags purchased to honor those who have lost their battle with cancer lined the track. Ashley DeBartolo ’18 shared comments about her connection to cancer before the group took a somber memorial lap together.

Six hours later, the ten student teams had raised $12,000. ODA now holds the top company spot in Manatee County’s Relay for Life event this year, yielding 15% of the county’s total raised to date. The organizers are thankful for passionate teams who went above and beyond with their fundraising endeavors. The four student organizers are thankful for the belief and support they received from the school’s administration which allowed them to put this successful event together.
