Students Showcase Talent for a Good Cause at Thunderpalooza 2018

Students shared impressive vocal and instrumental abilities during the 12th Annual Thunderpalooza talent showcase, presented by Tri-M Music Society. Tremendous talent was exhibited from students in grades 6 - 12 and all for a good cause. The $5 entry fee to the show and sales of all concessions went to support Manasota Buds, an organization dedicated to promoting understanding and acceptance of Down Syndrome.
The school’s resident rock band, Mint Rose (Ethan Ball ‘19, Kat Gauhkman ‘19, Ethan Marino ‘19, and Filip Svoboda ‘19), kicked off the show with a David Bowie hit, followed by a classical piece played by Arthur Wang ’21 on violin and Emily Liu ’18 on piano. The juxtaposition of various genres continued through the night as students expressed themselves through song. Many confidently took the spotlight solo. Collin O’Callaghan ’19 and Jim Cai ’20 both rocked out on guitar. The Middle School was represented with melodic tunes from Ian Crews ’24 and Alena Schiro ’22. Upper School crooners Kiley Cassis ’19, Sofia Delgado ’19, Leeson Foullon ‘19, Kinsey Newhams ‘19, and Andrea Shiro ’19 blew the audience away with stylistic renditions of everything from Frank Sinatra to Vance Joy. The Deer Street Boys faculty group of Sean Ball, Tim Brewer, Dane Gass, Mike Newhams, and Ken Sommers serenaded the audience with a BackStreet Boys favorite, complete with choreography and costumes.
