PREP FOOTBALL: Thunder rumble past Panthers, 40-24
ODA's football team continues its undefeated season with a win over Bradenton Christian.
The Out-of-Door Academy football team came into its game against Bradenton Christian with a glittering array of stats and a reputation for having a stingy defense.
The Thunder showed a few more impressive wrinkles in defeating the host Panthers 40-24 Friday night in the State Athletic Conference Coral Bay Division opener for both teams.
ODA (4-0) had given up 15 points in its three previous games while the winless Panthers (0-3) allowed 58 in its first two games and scored only 14.
BCS showed it was not intimidated, scoring on it first three possessions of the game and leading 18-14 in the first half.
The Panthers used their speed and the passing of quarterback Zach Seagraves. He threw a 46-yard scoring strike to EJ Williams and BCS added six more points on a 6-yard run by Demarri Spruill. They scored their final first half points on an 85-yard pass from Seagraves to Joey Bivona.
“They are fast, they are athletic and explosive,” ODA head coach Chris Kempton said. “They had a great plan and got the ball to their athletes in space.
We had to make some adjustments to slow them down and our kids did a great job in the second half. We had to get more speed on the field.”

ODA also showed it can score points when trailing. The Thunder were led by two way workhorse Colin Castro, rushed for 206 yards on 27 carries and scored three touchdowns.
“They are a good team, but couldn’t hang with us in the second half,” Castro said. “We wore them down and took them out in the second half. I was a little surprised they got up on us, but we didn’t let it get us down. We always stay strong. We are a never quit team.”
ODA got a solid game from quarterback Tyler Beasley, who completed 13 of 24 passes for 203 yards. Williams caught seven passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns.
ODA’s defense recovered three fumbles and picked off a pass. Two of the turnovers set up a short field that led to two touchdowns.
“They wanted it more in the second half than we did,” BCS coach Dan Fort said. “I am glad about how we scored points, but you can’t turn the football over the way we did and win games. Our game plan worked and we moved the football, but we didn’t execute everything the way we needed to win the game.”
Last season Out-Of-Door Academy snapped a four game losing streak to Bradenton Christian by edging the Panthers 7-6.j
