Local bee expert Tom Mawn visits the AP Environmental Science class to share apiary knowledge.
Sarasota beekeeper and rescuer Tom Mawn visited the Advanced Placement Environmental Science class and gave a demonstration in the Savidge/Bowers Library. Mr. Mawn spoke with the students about the importance of honey bees to the environment, and how pesticides, monoculture, and urban development have negative impacts on the honey bee population. The class learned about the anatomical structure of bees and how changes in their environment affect their physical ability to pollinate plants. Students were able to study an active hive, learn about the history of beekeeping, and hear how bee stings may be used to help those suffering from medical conditions such as arthritis and multiple sclerosis.
