SARASOTA COUNTY – AT&T shows students at Out of Door Academy about the dangers of distracted driving using smartphones for the ‘It Can Wait Campaign’.

The ‘It Can Wait Campaign’ says students put on the head gear and witnessed a theatrical 3D experience while listening to first-hand accounts of victims affected from distracted driving.

After experiencing the virtual reality students left with an impact of wow.

Four out of ten drivers admit to using social media on their phones while driving on the road.

The ‘It Can Wait Campaign’ has inspired more than 30 million pledges not to drive distracted.

AT&T spokesperson Michael Stephenson says drivers don’t realize how far they travel just looking at the phone for a brief moment.

“There’s a football statistic in this video that shows you if you’re going 55 miles per hour, and you take a look at your phone for two seconds you traveled the length of a football field blind folded. That’s worse than drunk driving.”

Out of Door Academy senior Collin O’Callaghan says the experience opened his eyes.

“While I was watching it I was actually enthralled by a lot of this because it really shows you a better natural view on what it’s like when you’re texting and driving and the dangers and consequences of that.”
