Honoring our Veterans
Out-of-Door veteran families and friends were honored guests at Veterans Day events on both ODA campuses.
Every November, Out-of-Door Lower School students honor their veteran families and friends during a special assembly. On Friday, November 9, Head of School Mr. David Mahler welcomed more than 25 special guests to the Veterans Day Assembly at the Historic Siesta Key Campus.
The students sang military songs to the veterans, including “Pack Up Your Troubles” and “Grand Old Flag.” They also showed their gratitude to military members stationed abroad by donating Halloween candy that will be delivered to the troops by the Manasota Operation Troop Support (MOTS), an organization that supplies active duty military members with items to make life away from home more manageable.

On the Uihlein Campus, Middle School students welcomed four veterans into the Petrik Thunderdome for their assembly. The veterans spoke candidly about their time serving our country, sharing stories and experiences with the assembled students. The speakers talked about the importance of Veterans Day, and how they show their own respect for those who have served on this special day. "It is the people, not just simply the weapons, that make us the best military force in the world," noted Master Chief Petty Officer Jim Nichols. After the assembly, the veterans visited several classrooms and spoke with smaller groups in Q&A breakout sessions. The students asked sensitive and insightful questions, and showed great respect during their interactions with the guests.
November is a time to honor and show respect to those who have served in our Armed Forces. We are proud to have had the opportunity to host our esteemed guests and thank them for their service to our country.
