ODA swimmer has top finishes at State Championships

Bayshore High’s Riley Ober successfully defended her state championship in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events in the Class 2A state swimming championships at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center on Saturday.

The senior won the 200 event in 1 minute, 48.93 seconds and later claimed victory in the 100 freestyle in 51 seconds. Ober, the reigning HTPreps Girls Swimmer of the Year who has committed to Indiana University, finishes her high school career with six state championships.

In the boys meet, Bayshore’s Andrew Kalaman, earned silver in the 500 freestyle. Lemon Bay senior Gage Denson took eighth place in the diving competition. He also joined Joey Sacco, Aiden Koss and Eddie David in the 200 freestyle relay and gave the Mantas an eighth place finish.

In the Class 1A meet, Bradenton Christian’s Anna Freed earned a silver medal in the 100 backstroke. The junior finished the race in 55.42 seconds. Freed also had a fourth place finish in the 200 individual medley.

Out-of-Door Academy’s Sarsen Whatmore earned medals in a pair of events, taking fifth in the 200 freestyle and sixth in the 500 freestyle.
