Eighth Graders Finish Unit on 1950s Culture and History with Dance
Eighth graders in pastel poodle skirts and bobby socks, rolled up 501s and black leather jackets took the dance floor Monday to show off moves they’ve been learning at the culminating event of their cross-curricular 1950s unit.
The Black Box Theater was hoppin’ as DJ (Mr.) Gass cranked up tunes from the era and emcee Mrs. Dozier bopped along to the beat. Students paired up during the start of the event to get warmed up for the dance and hula hoop contests. The highlight of the event were the group dance skits - check out this great dance routine to “Rockin’ Robin.”
Learning about the post-war boom in the U.S., the Cold War, and McCarthyism in history provided classes with an understanding of the dichotomy of the renewed hopes of Americans returning from war and the rampant fear and misunderstanding of Communism that was running simultaneously throughout the country. Discussions of Arthur Miller’s play, “The Crucible” in English class was another avenue for the 8th graders to learn about the concerns Americans were expressing following WWII. Finally, listening to music of the era and learning some of the dance steps helped the Class of 2023 understand the social scene of teenagers during that time.
