Lower School Students Get Creative on Arts Day

On Friday, April 26, the Historic Lower School Campus was a sea of music, artwork, and theater performances during the annual Lower School Arts Day.
Pre-K, kindergarten, first, and second grade students started off the day with an adorable concert for parents in the dining hall. After their performance, the group moved to the Kozel Family Amphitheater for an energetic drumming session with Mr. Erik Dunton of Positive RePercussions. They met with Mrs. Kim Farcot, a children’s book illustrator, portrait painter, and mother of Madi Farcot ’26, who talked to the students about her career as an illustrator, and helped them make their own books. Students also made up-cycled water bottle fish, pipe cleaner glasses and headbands, and a large-scale group weaving. The second and third graders had the opportunity to work with a guest artist, Mr. Jay Cornwell. Mr. Cornwell taught the groups cartooning techniques, and led them through a fun hands-on tutorial to learn how to draw the character BB8 from “Star Wars”!

In the morning, fourth graders read the book “The Dot” about how there is an artist in all of us and then designed their own dots for the annual display in the library. At the same time, fifth graders worked on their traditional fifth grade stepping stones, incorporating ceramics pieces they have created throughout the course of the year. Students also painted rocks with inspirational messages that were hidden around campus for others to find, and worked with Florida Studio Theater members on the plays they have been working on during the year.

The final event of the day was the 4th and 5th grade concert. The band, chorus, and orchestra all played a variety of music, impressing their packed audience with the level mastery they have achieved. At the conclusion of the performance, Head of Lower School Mrs. Tanna Horner praised the students for their dedication to the arts and the amount of hard work they put in to make the beautiful performance a success.
