Outward Bound Experience Provides Fresh Perspective in the Classroom

Two Out-of-Door faculty members tackled challenges head-on during an intensive professional development experience for educators in Pisgah National Forest.
Dr. Ellen Zitani and Mrs. Kimberly Walsh joined a group of nine female teachers and three experienced Outward Bound guides for a five-day/four-night trek into Pisgah National Forest in Cedar Rock, North Carolina. The group left their technology behind and donned heavy backpacks loaded with all of the supplies they would need, taking only a compass and topographic maps for navigation.

The group’s physical challenges included hiking carrying their fully loaded packs, rock climbing, and belaying. The teachers worked together, encouraging each other to ensure they all ended each day feeling accomplished and successful. “We quickly learned to realize what strengths you have and the power of optimism. Focusing on the things you do have instead of what you don’t have helped us to reach our goals,” said Dr. Zitani.

Some challenges, like rock climbing and the high-ropes course, were a breeze for Dr. Zitani. But for Mrs. Walsh, the ropes course was an enormous psychological challenge. After pushing herself to leap from a high platform, she realized she was capable of much more than she originally perceived.

“I returned with a more expanded view of my abilities and potential and the power of team building,” said Mrs. Walsh. “I am encouraged to bring the ‘dependence, independence, interdependence’ model into my classes for improved student-centered learning opportunities.”

Both educators say that a big focus of the experience was learning about communication, relationship building, and real fear versus perceived fear/risk.

“When you approach something that seems insurmountable, most of the real risk doesn’t exist. The real importance is in relationships, and the connections we build with our students,” said Mrs. Walsh.

“This experience rejuvenated my approach in the classroom,” said Dr. Zitani. “I’ve refreshed my communication and decision-making skills, and have already been using some of the reflective work we learned from Outward Bound with my students.”
