Students and Faculty Represent ODA at Florida Music Educators Conference

Three talented Out-of-Door students, accompanied by their music teachers, were selected to the Middle and High School All-State Honors Orchestra at the 2020 FMEC in Tampa.
Three ODA students were selected for the All-State Honors Orchestras, performing at the Florida Music Educators (FMEA) Conference in Tampa. This elite group includes the top-performing Middle and Upper School orchestra students from all over the state.

Violinists Katy Fulton ‘24 and Kelsey Lugannani ’20, and violist Chelsea Ball ’21 represented our community at the conference this month, one of the largest music development events in the United States. In addition to approximately 250 clinic sessions and concerts, it is host to the All-State Bands, Orchestras, and Choruses. Out-of-Door’s Dr. Linda Vasilaki and Music Director Nicole Young attended multiple workshops and conferences to enhance school programs, foster independent musicianship, build student leadership skills in the ensemble, and direct our ensembles with a learner-centered approach. Orchestra directors from across the state of Florida had the opportunity to share best practices and expertise.

Katy Fulton, Kelsey Lugannani, and Chelsea Ball have all been members of the Out-of-Door Academy Orchestra program since their Siesta Key years. They learned Suzuki violin with Dr. Vasilaki, have acted as mentors to our orchestra members, played in countless community outreach concerts, and have been members of the Sarasota Youth Orchestra Program. These ODA musicians have represented our school with class and shared their impressive talents with peers from around the state. This experience will surely help shape their musical futures and inspire them to grow their musicianship.

The selected students rehearsed for approximately 20 hours over the span of three days and the conference culminated with a concert at the Marriott Grand Ballroom in Downtown Tampa. They were honored to have the opportunity to work with the incredible conductor Sarah B. Ball and renowned pedagogue, composer, and conductor Bob Phillips. Highlights from the concert included selections from Phillips’ own work “Impact” and “Jupiter” from the Planets, Op. 32 by Gustav Holst.
