Out-of-Door Academy grabbed a familiar face as its new boys basketball coach.

Monday, the Thunder named BJ Ivey as its new coach.

The long-time coach at Riverview High, Ivey took a position as director of basketball operations at Florida Gulf Coast University under Eagles coach Michael Fry.

Due to budget cuts at FGCU, Ivey returned to the area and is teaching and instructing drivers’ education at Parrish Community High.

When the Thunder were looking for a basketball coach, Ivey found the opening intriguing.

“It’s a really good situation,” Ivey said. “It definitely has a ton of potential to build a program there with kids who are high academic and high athletic achieving-type kids. I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of those types of kids at Riverview. So I do feel like I know that type of player student/athlete and can work well with them. I’m a teacher first so I like the high academic stuff. I taught AP-type classes for the last 10 years or so. So that excites me.”

Ivey was the head coach of the girls basketball program for three years and then took over the boys for the next 10. The Rams won 270 games and eight district titles during Ivey’s tenure with the boys team. In 2016, Riverview went to the state final before losing to Coral Springs, 61-57.

Off the court, Ivey was named Sarasota County Teacher of the Year for the 2017-18 school year.

"It's definitely a good situation," Ivey said. "They definitely are a high-academic institution. They're sending kids to top-level colleges on a regular basis. They would like to increase their athletic programs. I'm definitely interested in helping them grow the basketball program. To have the opportunity to help kids who really want to maximize themselves as a whole, as a student and athlete. It'll give me a chance to work with some guys who are driven to reach their potential in all areas. It's very exciting."

Ivey also has been training area basketball players a couple of times per week.

Out-of-Door finished 9-12 last season.
