ODA Celebrates the Arts

Student-artists were in the spotlight for two days filled with musical performances, visual art displays, and choral concerts. Click for photos from Lower School Arts Day and Middle & Upper School Arts Day.
Lower School’s Arts Day began with an outdoor concert in the Dart Family Pavilion. Families enjoyed performances by the band and orchestra, as well as wonderful songs from the fourth and fifth grade chorus. Pre-K and kindergarten students delighted the audience with adorable songs that included drumming and whimsical props for an added touch of fun. Following the morning performance, classes rotated through stations throughout the campus. Lower Schoolers had the opportunity to work with Upper School physics students to create their own spiral paintings as well as dimensional underwater scenes from “The Pout-Pout Fish.” The younger students enjoyed a performance by the cast of “Pippin” and viewed color images rendered by Upper School STEM classes using our Hitachi Scanning Electron Microscope. In the afternoon, families were wowed by chorus performances by our first, second, and third graders in the Kozel Family Amphitheater. Throughout the day, students and families were encouraged to visit the Dining Hall to view the beautiful student artwork on display.

Middle and Upper School Arts Day was a day-long celebration, featuring a variety of performances, demonstrations, and an art gallery that spanned both floors of the Arts Building. Guests toured the exhibit to view the students’ ceramics, paintings, digital art, drawings, and sculptures, as well as learn more about each artist and their artwork by accessing a video through a QR code next to their artwork. Visitors enjoyed walking through the installation of butterflies that created the sensation of flying as one passed through their midst, the amazing “monster” collaborations between third graders and Upper School artists, and the eighth grader’s caricatures of their favorite teachers.

The Advanced Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Band, Steel Drums, String Orchestra, and Concert Band gave impressive performances in the Petrik Thunderdome. Concertmaster Natalie Carrión ’23 led the orchestra through their challenging pieces including Black Violin’s “A-Flat” and Hans Zimmer’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” and  Concert and Jazz Band member Pedro Briceno ’23 wowed the audience with his solos on saxophone and the EWI–an Electric Wind Instrument. For the final concert of the day, Middle School and Advanced Chorus gave emotional and moving performances in the Black Box Theater. The Middle Schoolers opened with several upbeat contemporary pieces including “Love Grows” with fantastic solos by Summer Smith ’28 and Emma Szabo ’26 and “The Story of My Life” by One Direction. The Advanced Chorus featured intricate pieces the upperclassmen handled with skill,  including “Vivir Mi Vida” sung with true passion by Svetlana Maury Kondratovich ’23 and Lia Torruella de Iraola ’23, “Never Enough” sung by senior Madisyn Wandall, and an original song written, played, and performed by senior Kaitlyn Hornung.
