Out-of-Door Inspires the Spirit of Giving

For nearly two decades, The Out-of-Door Academy has partnered with Gocio Elementary School on a variety of service initiatives, including book and clothing drives, holiday gift collections, and mentorship programs. One of the most meaningful traditions at ODA has become the Thanksgiving gift baskets.

Leading up to the holiday, Ms. Marya Annicelli and Ms. Katty Driggers from Gocio Elementary visited ODA to speak to our students about the importance of this program. They shared how the assistance that our school community provides has deep meaning to those who receive it and about the direct impact this kindness has upon all of the recipients.

This year, through donations made by ODA families and educators on both campuses, ODA will donate full Thanksgiving meals to 75 Gocio families. Each basket contains all the makings of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, including a turkey, pumpkin pie, and ingredients for multiple side dishes including mashed potatoes, candied yams, green bean casserole, and cranberry sauce.

Through this endeavor, students have the opportunity to demonstrate one of our core values by offering service to others. Being a true community-wide effort, the generous contributions were packed by ODA volunteers into bins decorated and donated by our Parent Association and delivered to Gocio by student representatives.
