The Benefits of Book Clubs

Book clubs are an incredibly powerful tool for creating a collaborative learning environment used in Out-of-Door’s third, fourth, and fifth grade classrooms. Click for photos

During the first few weeks of the school year, students in grades three through five participated in book clubs organized by the required summer reading books they chose. From escape rooms to discussion cards, educators led their groups through a wide assortment of activities tailored to each novel.

While exploring these stories further, students were challenged to share their thoughts, consider others' opinions, and formulate new questions regarding what they had read. The variety of perspectives on individual topics enhanced communication skills and the ability to express oneself, as well as developing more challenging skills such as "discuss and disagree." These lessons provided an excellent opportunity for both students and educators to come together to celebrate one of their favorite hobbies - reading!

"Books clubs are an excellent way to start off the school year! They allow children across homerooms and grade levels to come together to discuss a book they read over the summer," said Mrs. Triviño. "These clubs provide opportunities for students to create connections and have conversations with peers and educators that otherwise might not have occurred. Students were incredibly excited to share their thoughts with the members of their group, and the feedback from both students and educators has been overwhelmingly positive."
