Turning Potential Into Purpose
The Out-of-Door Upper School program is designed to prepare students for admission to highly selective colleges and meaningful careers. Here, students learn to think creatively, collaborate effectively, and approach challenges with critical insight.
Customized curricula and innovative technology empower teachers to meet the needs of today’s learners in a dynamic, evolving world. Whether debating in the classroom, testing water quality in the Sarasota Bay, analyzing business investments, or exploring global cultures, students follow unique paths guided by passion and supported by expert educators. No two experiences are the same—but all students graduate with the confidence and preparation to succeed in whatever comes next.
In the Upper School, our dedicated educators provide unwavering support and encouragement, helping students navigate their academic and personal growth. Advisors at each grade level establish a home-base and guide their small groups throughout the four-year journey, offering personalized attention and mentorship every step of the way.
An exceptional team of educators fosters academic excellence through a supportive and nurturing approach. The course load is challenging yet manageable, with each educator ensuring that students receive the help and guidance they need to succeed. What truly distinguishes our Upper School experience is the genuine care and commitment of our educators to the well-being and success of every student.
With a vigorous college preparatory curriculum that includes honors and Advanced Placement courses, educators design personalized learning experiences that encourage students to think creatively, collaboratively, and critically. With the support of our talented educators, students are able to write their own story based on their interests, learning goals, and future aspirations
With this vision in mind, the Graduate of Distinction Program was announced in 2025. This program offers an exclusive opportunity for Upper School students to delve deeply into specialized areas of academic interest.
The Graduate of Distinction Program allows students to pursue advanced studies in fields such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) or Fine and Performing Arts, providing a pathway for students to demonstrate expertise and growth. Through interdisciplinary learning, experiential education, and mentorship, participants engage in advanced coursework, hands-on projects, and a senior capstone that reflects their dedication and mastery of their chosen discipline. This program, starting with the Class of 2027, offers students the opportunity to stand out academically while receiving personalized guidance from expert advisors.
Looking ahead, we plan to expand the program with future distinctions in Global Citizenship and Business, further enriching the academic experience for our students.
Upper School students are actively solving real-world problems through immersive, hands-on learning experiences that prepare them for college and beyond. From tagging spotted eagle rays and developing sustainable technology solutions to competing in complex robotics and coding challenges, they gain invaluable skills that help them stand out in the college admissions process. Whether it's through restoring coastal dunes, monitoring water quality on Siesta Key, or engaging in cultural exchange opportunities, ODA students apply their knowledge to tackle pressing global issues. These experiences not only build critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills but also foster confidence, initiative, and a deep commitment to environmental and global stewardship.
