Student Productions
Students step into the world of live theater through an open audition process, joining productions that demand creativity, focus, and teamwork. Once cast, they dive into after-school and weekend rehearsals, collaborating with directors to bring powerful performances to the stage.
Actors sharpen their skills in movement, voice, and character work, while crew members gain hands-on training in lighting, sound, makeup, costumes, props, and set design. Every rehearsal, every detail, and every role matters—onstage and behind the scenes.
Through the shared challenge of building a production, students grow as artists, teammates, and leaders—carrying with them a skill set that extends well beyond the final curtain.
Technical Theater
For students interested in the behind-the-scenes artistry of theater, our technical theater program offers hands-on experience with every element of production. Students take on key roles in lighting design, sound engineering, costume creation, makeup, props, and set construction, working side-by-side with industry professionals and directors. From the first design meeting to the final performance, technical theater students are essential to shaping the world of the show — building creative solutions, mastering technical skills, and leading the collaborative effort that brings each production to life.
A Stage for Every Age
Through our after school Prime Time offerings, musical theater is offered to Lower School students in grades 2-5. Led by dynamic educators, Lower School performers commit to a full year of theater enrichment to learn lines, music, choreography, and timing. Producers work with our students to create costumes and unique sets. Performances take place in front of a live audience.
Students have opportunities to take theater classes as part of their weekly curriculum beginning in sixth grade. These classes include skill-building in acting, inflection, movement, and timing. Designing and building sets is also part of these classes, allowing for hands-on experiences and artistic freedom.
Middle School students are also invited to audition for cast or crew for 2-3 school productions each year. At least one production per year is dedicated to Middle School cast and crew only.
Students may sign up for theater classes each year in Upper School. These classes help students level up their skills in acting, directing, and theatrical writing. For those who don’t choose the spotlight, ODA offers technical theater courses to learn about lighting, running soundboards, set design, and more.
Students are invited to audition for annual plays and musicals, which are performed in the Black Box Theater on the Uihlein Campus. Advanced students often direct and/or produce these productions.
