Convocation
Since 2002, Convocation has brought our community together to honor our seniors. At this celebration, seniors are paired up with a kindergarten buddy with whom they work throughout the year. This tradition creates a unique bond between our oldest students and their kindergarten counterparts.

Homecoming
Homecoming, at its heart, is about belonging. It’s a reminder that, no matter where life leads us, there will always be a place here at ODA to call home—a place that welcomes and celebrates its own, no matter how much time has passed or how far we've traveled. This special time brings together the current ODA community and opens the gates for alumni to return, reconnect, and experience the growth of the school.
The elements of the celebration symbolize what makes ODA unique: the family picnic represents the power of our community and the generations who cherish this place, performances by the pep band showcase the creativity and artistry that flow through our school, the parade highlights the diverse passions and people who make our community vibrant, and the football game, with its thrilling display of teamwork and determination, unites us all in shared school spirit as we cheer our team on to victory.
Lower School Events
Traditions are the heartbeat of the ODA Lower School experience. From their very first days on campus, students are immersed in a vibrant culture of meaningful milestones and joyful community rituals. To name a few:
- Kindergarteners are paired with senior buddies, forging friendships across generations.
- In first grade, the much-anticipated Iditarod combines creativity and teamwork in a spirited simulation of the Alaskan sled race, and students experience the wonder of hatching chicks in their classroom. First graders on the Clark Road campus mark their growth by Crossing the Quad.
- Second graders on the Siesta Key campus participate in Crossing the Mulch—a symbolic journey that signifies their readiness for the next chapter.
- In third grade, students bring history to life as they portray notable figures in the beloved Wax Museum, captivating historic figures with character and confidence.
- Fifth grade culminates with two hallmark traditions: the energetic Turkey Bowl, a flag football showdown, and the unforgettable overnight Dude Ranch adventure, where students bond and reflect on their Lower School journey.
With book fairs, assemblies, and countless shared celebrations along the way, it’s clear—tradition runs deep at ODA.
Thunder Fun Day
Thunder Fun Day takes place on the Historic Siesta Key Campus and includes a snow slide, bounce houses, games, crafts, student organization booths, food, and more. One of the highlights includes a musical chairs-style game where guests can compete to win cakes donated by our kindergarten families.

Grandfriends Day
On Grandfriends Day, grandparents and special guests are invited to our Lower Campuses to experience a day in the life of their ODA student. Guests enjoy musical performances and participate in activities with students to see what students are learning.

Banyan Ball
Since 1979, Banyan Ball (formerly known as Extravaganza) has been ODA's primary fundraising event, raising money to support capital improvements, financial assistance, faculty salaries, our endowment, and more. This elegant social event includes an online auction, dinner, dancing, and a live auction of exquisite items and amazing experiences.
Spirit Day
Spirit Day at ODA is a cherished tradition and a highlight of every school year, celebrating teamwork, camaraderie, and the thrill of friendly competition. What began in the 1980s as a spirited rivalry between the White and Green Teams has transformed into an exhilarating contest between white vs. blue, inspired by ODA’s modern-day spirit colors. The stakes are high, with each team vying not just for victory but for a year’s worth of bragging rights—a rivalry so enduring that alumni often remain loyal to their team colors long after graduation.

Middle School Minimester
As the school year draws to a close, Middle School Minimester trips provide a chance to reflect, connect, and grow. Stepping away from campus, students and their advisors find themselves in new environments, where the bonds they’ve built throughout the year are deepened. While academics remain central, it’s the shared experiences—laughter, discovery, and adventure—that truly define these multi-day overnight trips.
Stepping Stones
The stepping stones at the Historic Siesta Key Campus are more than just markers—they are living testaments to the legacy of every student who has walked this path. While the exact origins of the tradition remain unknown, the earliest stone found on campus dates back to 1932. Since then, each graduating class has added its own unique imprint, leaving behind a personal reflection of their journey. These stones do more than mark time—they serve as a powerful, ongoing tribute to the enduring spirit of the ODA community.
Graduation Ceremonies
Commencement is the pinnacle of tradition at The Out-of-Door Academy. It marks not just the end of a chapter, but the beginning of a bold, purpose-driven future. As graduates step confidently into the world, they carry with them the knowledge, character, and values shaped by years of meaningful experiences. Along the way, students are honored at key milestones—ceremonies in Lower and Middle School celebrate their growth and achievements, propelling them forward with confidence and purpose.
