Dual Varsity Soccer Championships Highlight a Bright Future for the Program

On Saturday, January 13, both the boys and girls varsity soccer teams brought home impressive state championship victories. Competing in the Sunshine State Athletic Association (SSAA) State Championships, the boys were crowned champions in the 6A bracket with a 2-1 victory over Duval Charter, while the girls were crowned champions in the 4A bracket with a 2-1 victory over cross-town rival St. Stephen's. Both victories marked special moments for the teams as the girls earned their second straight state title and the boys earned their first state title in their first season competing in the conference.

Goals in the girls' game were notched by seniors Abbey Burwood and Charlie Hugill. Charlie's crucial goal, secured in the final minute and a half, not only propelled the Thunder into the lead but also ensured their ultimate victory.

Senior Zack Weisblatt netted both goals in the boys' game, earning one through a penalty kick and sealing the victory with the game-winning goal, executed brilliantly with a spin move into the back of the net.

The future of ODA soccer is bright as both Middle School teams entered postseason play in the MAC2 Tournament this week. On Wednesday, the MS Boys secured a victory over Sarasota Christian (3-0) to move on to the semi-final round against Bradenton Christian at Lakewood Ranch Prep on Thursday, January 18 at 4:00 pm. The MS Girls earned a first-round bye in the tournament and played in the semi-final game on Thursday, January 18 against Babcock Neighborhood School at Bradenton Christian at 4:00 pm. ODA hosts the MAC2 Championship finals on Friday, January 19. The Girls' final will be played at 5:00 pm and the Boys' final at 6:30 pm. Join us in Thunder Stadium to cheer on the teams to victory!
