Middle School English
The Middle School English curriculum fosters critical thinking and effective communication through a rich blend of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students engage with fiction, nonfiction, and digital texts, developing their ability to craft and defend ideas through essays, research papers, creative writing, and collaborative projects.
A strong emphasis is placed on writing mechanics, including grammar, vocabulary, and text structure, with students applying these skills in analytical, narrative, expository, and descriptive forms. Class discussions, annotated reading, and group work promote deeper engagement and understanding, equipping students with the skills and confidence needed for success in Upper School and beyond.
The sixth grade English curriculum emphasizes foundational skills in reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and both oral and nonverbal communication. Students engage in a structured writing process that supports clear, effective expression and the development of strong writing mechanics.
Daily communication practice centers on civil discourse, with students honing their speaking and listening skills through thoughtful, quote-based discussions. Mentor texts spanning a variety of fiction genres are selected to spark curiosity and foster a love of reading, while also serving as models for literary analysis and craft. As students explore these works, they develop key skills such as annotation, textual citation, vocabulary in context, figurative language, and overall comprehension—laying a strong foundation for academic growth and confidence in language arts.
The seventh grade English curriculum integrates core language arts skills with a global perspective, complementing the interdisciplinary study of world cultures. Through literature from diverse regions, students deepen their understanding of global themes while strengthening their ability to analyze elements of fiction such as plot, character, setting, and theme.
Students write in a range of genres—narrative, analytical, and creative—while grammar and writing mechanics are embedded in daily instruction. Creative expression is encouraged through journal writing, as well as projects like modern story adaptations and dramatic reenactments of scenes from plays.
Technology is seamlessly woven throughout the curriculum. Students develop digital literacy through tools such as Google Docs, Google Drive, iMovie, and Keynote, learning to communicate and present ideas effectively in a variety of formats. The program equips students with the skills to think critically, write clearly, and express themselves confidently in both written and spoken forms.
The eighth grade English curriculum is thematically aligned with the American History course, allowing students to explore major historical events and cultural shifts through a literary lens. This integrated approach deepens their understanding of both disciplines and encourages critical engagement with texts and ideas.
Students refine their reading and writing skills through close analysis of form, style, purpose, and perspective. They learn to recognize that all texts carry embedded messages, dominant readings, and potential biases—and to consider their own roles as active, thoughtful readers. A variety of written and spoken formats—including analytical essays, news articles, monologues, speeches, and creative writing—invite students to respond to literature and historical contexts in dynamic, meaningful ways.
Ongoing reading and writing workshops, independent reading, and vocabulary study further support students in developing strong communication skills and literary confidence as they prepare for Upper School.
