Middle School Science
The science program at Out-of-Door Academy blends traditional academic content with hands-on learning in lab sciences and engineering. Designed to foster critical thinking and creative problem-solving, the curriculum spans environmental, life, and physical sciences. Middle School science classes take place in the classroom, lab, and field, offering diverse learning experiences. Students develop analytical skills while also becoming proficient in using technology, working collaboratively in teams, and communicating their findings effectively. This comprehensive approach prepares students to engage with scientific inquiry and challenges in both academic and real-world contexts.
Sixth grade Science focuses on Earth science and environmental science, serving as a preparatory course for high school environmental science and a bridge from elementary to secondary science. The class provides a hands-on, problem-based learning environment where students are introduced to key scientific principles through projects addressing global environmental issues. Students engage individually and collaboratively to explore topics such as the nature of science, botany, biomes, and ecology, while developing critical skills in scientific inquiry and problem-solving. This approach equips students to understand and assess the systems and structures of Earth.
Seventh grade Science focuses on life sciences, exploring animal adaptations, biology, and our connection to the natural world. The course delves into the intricate relationships between plants, animals, and their environments, fostering an understanding of how living organisms adapt and interact with their surroundings. Through hands-on learning, students will engage in scientific inquiry, observation, and research to explore topics such as animal behavior, plant biology, ecosystems, and environmental impact. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, the scientific method, and collaborative problem-solving. Students will deepen their understanding of biology and its relevance to real-world issues, developing a greater appreciation for the interdependence of all life forms. This course serves as an important foundation for future studies in the sciences, with a focus on cultivating a deeper connection to the natural world.
Physical Science is a high school preparatory course that integrates physics and chemistry, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of physical and chemical interactions. Through lab-based experimentation, class lectures, engineering design activities, and research, students explore key concepts such as critical thinking, the scientific method, the metric system, and the properties and interactions of matter. Topics include velocity and acceleration, forces, energy and work, robotics, coding, atomic structure, trends in the periodic table, elements and their properties, and chemical reactions. In addition to academic content, students engage in analytical reading of current science articles, honing their ability to apply the scientific method and engineering design process to solve real-world problems. As part of the course, students are also introduced to the fundamentals of 3D printing, adding a technological dimension to their learning.
