Now in its third year, the ODA Upper School House System has become a defining part of student life—one that continues to shape the school’s culture through friendly competition, shared values, and a deep sense of belonging.

What began as a new initiative has evolved into a cherished tradition, bringing together students and faculty in ways that transcend grade levels and classrooms. House events are now some of the most anticipated moments of the year, filling the campus with color, cheers, and contagious energy. That energy has only grown this year with the addition of four new House leaders—Mr. Rich Friedland, Ms. Mara Vazquez, Mr. Fernando Azcona, and Mr. Mike Saxton—whose enthusiasm has helped fuel a growing sense of excitement and unity.

Early in the competition, House Jacaranda has surged into the lead, thanks in part to its strong showing in the collection of Thunderbucks—the currency of character within the House System. Thunderbucks are awarded by educators to students who demonstrate ODA’s Core Values: Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence, and Responsibility. Each Thunderbuck represents a moment when a student has gone above and beyond, embodying the principles that define the ODA community.

Mr. Azcona (House Sabal Leader) shares, “Thunderbucks highlight students’ best attributes and their genuine application of the Core Values. They bring smiles of pride and surprise, often recognizing acts that students didn’t even realize were worthy of celebration. And beyond individual recognition, each Thunderbuck contributes to a House’s overall success, creating a sense of shared pride and connection that extends across the student body.”

Last year’s champion, House Mangrove, set a high standard by earning the most Thunderbucks and consistently demonstrating teamwork and integrity. As this year’s points accumulate, all four Houses are chasing that same goal: to lift one another up, celebrate effort and excellence, and strengthen the bonds that make ODA’s Upper School community so vibrant.

What began as a new program just a few years ago has now grown into a living, lasting tradition—one that continues to capture the spirit of ODA: pride, connection, and purpose, and the unshakable sense of belonging that defines our community.
